MS Dhoni, fondly known as “Captain Cool” for his calm demeanour on the field, had applied for a trademark for the name, and now, his application has officially been approved by the Trademark Registry of India.
MS Dhoni is always referred to as Captain Cool for the majority of his career for his calm and composed qualities on the field. MS Dhoni applied for the trademark in June 2023, when there was another party involved in the mix. Prabha Skill Sports applied for the trademark for the name ‘Captain Cool’.

In response to this, MS Dhoni filed a petition against the cited mark, alleging that the company was trying to cash in on his brand value and the widespread popularity of the term. Notably, the ‘Captain Cool’ name was registered under categories related to sports training and facilities.
In the petition filed by MS Dhoni, it stated:
"This is a case of bad faith registration on the part of the company, aimed at deceiving the public and unlawfully enriching themselves by trading on the name of a well-known individual."
Dhoni's application was accepted after at least four hearings.
Finally, on June 16, 2025, MS Dhoni’s application was approved by the Trademark Registry of India. Now, Captain Cool has to wait another 120 days in case any third party objects. If no rejection comes in the way, his trademark will be registered officially. Notably, the ‘Captain Cool’ name had been registered under categories related to sports training and facilities.
