"He Can Work on His Test Match Batting" - Former Indian Captain Backs Shubman Gill

Saurav Ganguly and Shubman Gill

Shubman Gill is set to ignite a new era in Indian cricket as he prepares to lead the Test team. The India tour of England begins on June 20 at Headingley.

Gill was appointed Indian captain after Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from the format. In this new chapter, Shubman faces his biggest assignment yet, starting with a five-match Test series against England. This series also marks the beginning of the World Test Championship Cycle 2025–2027.

Ganguly Weighs In on Shubman Gill and India’s Post-Kohli Era

Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly gave a candid interview to Rev Sports, where he shared his thoughts on Shubman Gill and the future of Indian cricket following the era of Rohit Sharma, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Virat Kohli.

Ganguly expressed confidence in Gill’s batting ability and his potential to perform against England:

"Wishing him all the best. I am sure he can work on his Test match batting. He is a top-order batsman," Ganguly told Rev Sports.

He also emphasized the need for Gill to quickly adapt to English conditions, especially with the new ball:

"These are not conditions where you just hit through the line. It's going to seam, swing, the new ball will be different. There can be a time when India is 10 for 2, and he has to come and play the new ball, so the application will be different," Ganguly explained.

Ganguly Urges Gill to Strengthen Defense for Swinging English Conditions

Gill has played 13 overseas Tests, scoring 559 runs at an average of 25, with just two fifties. While not reflective of his usual form, this tour could be a turning point, especially with added leadership responsibilities. On this, Ganguly advised him to sharpen his defensive game:

"Shubman needs to score a bit more runs in these conditions when it's seaming and swinging. It is going to be a bit difficult upfront with the new ball. Batting at 100 for 2 and 20 for 4 are two different things, so he has to get the defence right, learn how to leave deliveries outside the off stump," he said.

Former Captain also noted that Gill must rely more on his front-foot technique to counter English pitches.

Excited about this new phase, Ganguly reflected on the rapid transition in Indian Test cricket, with big names now gone:

"There is no Kohli, no Rohit Sharma, no Ajinkya Rahane... It's amazing—how things change over a period is unbelievable," he concluded.
