Looking forward to the next season, CSK has called up Gujarat’s wicketkeeper-batter Urvil Patel for mid-season trials. Former Indian batter Wasim Jaffer broke the news, as quoted by News18. Chennai has invested in several youngsters this season, and Patel now becomes the third youngster to join CSK in recent times. CSK picked up Shaik Rasheed in the mega auction. Then, Ayush Mhatre joined the franchise as Ruturaj Gaikwad's replacement. Now, Patel is all set to join the CSK camp.
Surprised CSK Picked Ayush Mhatre Ahead Of Urvil Patel - Wasim Jaffer
Patel came into recognition after scoring a 28-ball century against Tripura in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy last year. Wasim Jaffer, while speaking to ESPN Cricinfo, rated the youngster very highly.
“I’ve heard, I’ve got back room news that CSK have called Urvil Patel, the guy who got a couple of hundreds in the Mushtaq Ali Trophy. I’m surprised that he was not picked by any franchise," Jaffer said while speaking on ESPNCricinfo.
“I was surprised. Even Ayush Mhatre was picked ahead of him. He’s been asked to trial there, so I don’t know what’s cooking there," Jaffer added.
Previously, South African breakout superstar Dewald Brevis also joined the franchise as an injury replacement. He scored 42 runs on his debut for CSK. Against PBKS, he scored a timely 36 runs off 26 balls and added a 78-run stand with Sam Curran (88 runs off 47 balls). Their contribution unfortunately ended in a losing cause.

Though CSK endured another difficult season, they reposed faith in the youngsters this season. This is perhaps their way of looking at the future. The likes of Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra could not make an impact at the top of the order. Hence, CSK went back to the youngsters and gave them chances to make an impact. They did show promise but could not perform under the pressure of expectations.
CSK, now eliminated from the tournament, has four more games. They next take on RCB at the Chinnaswamy on May 3, Saturday.
