IPL 2025 - CSK vs SRH: Dewald Brevis' Blitz Not Enough as Chennai Collapse

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) scored 154 runs in the first innings of the 43rd match of the Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025) against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on April 25.

SRH won the toss and opted to bowl first, keeping the dew in mind. Mohammad Shami struck on the first ball of the innings with an outswing delivery that forced Shaik Rasheed (0 run off 1 ball) to poke at it and give an easy catch to Abhishek Sharma at the slips.

This was followed by counterattack by Ayush Mhatre (30 runs off 19 balls), who was playing only his second IPL match. In an innings full of intent, Mhatre took on the likes of Pat Cummins, Jaydev Unadkat and Shami, showcasing his talent at the big stage.

After a flurry of boundaries, he was eventually dismissed by Cummins in the sixth over. The Sam Curran (9 runs off 10 balls) experiment also did not work. Curran, who came out to bat at No. 3, scored painstaking nine runs before holing out at deep mid-wicket off Harshal Patel in the fifth over.

CSK scored 50 runs in the powerplay for the loss of three wickets. With the arrival of Ravindra Jadeja (21 runs off 17 balls) at No. 4, the run-rate dropped, though the southpaw showed intent. Eventually, Jadeja was cleaned up by Kamindu Mendis in the 10th over.

Shivam Dube (12 runs off 9 balls) smashed two back-to-back boundaries in the 11th over off Shami to kickstart his innings.

Dewald Brevis (42 runs off 25 balls), who was making his debut in the yellow jersey, smacked three sixes off Kamindu’s bowling in the 12th over to bring the CSK innings back on track. Brevis hammered another maximum off Harshal in the 13th over but Kamindu took a stunner at long-off on the very next delivery as the South African departed after scoring 42 runs.

Unadkat caused Dube’s undoing in the 14th over. This brought MS Dhoni (6 runs off 10 balls) to the crease but even CSK’s captain could not do much as Harshal sent him back early in the 17th over.

Wickets continued to tumble as Cummins and Harshal dismissed Anshul Kamboj (2 runs off 4 balls) and Noor Ahmad (2 runs off 3 balls) in the 18th and 19th over respectively.

Deepak Hooda (22 runs off 21 balls) tonked a six off a no-ball in the 19th over off Harshal. After starting the 20th over with a four, Hooda struggled to time the ball and eventually failed to clear the long-off boundary, resulting in a catch off Unadkat's bowling.

CSK finished their innings at 154 runs in 19.5 overs for the loss of 10 wickets. For SRH, Harshal was the pick of the bowlers. He claimed four scalps and gave away just 28 runs in his four overs.
