Adam Gilchrist on Rohit Sharma

Former Australian wicketkeeper-batter Adam Gilchrist recently shared his views on the future of Indian captain Rohit Sharma, that he might not feature in the upcoming series against England for the test series. His comments sparked a wave of frustration among Rohit Sharma's fans on social media. Gilchrist suggested that Rohit may need to assess his physical condition and recent form, which could lead him to rethink his stance on retirement. "Rohit might have to consider his current form and fitness, and that could impact his decision to continue playing in the longer format," Gilchrist said during a podcast when asked about the Indian skipper's future.

"I don't see Rohit going to England. I just felt that he says he will assess it when he gets home. I mean, the first thing he will be met with when he gets home is a two-month-old baby that he has to change the nappies on. Now that might incentivise him to go to England. But I don't see him pressing on," Gilchrist said on the Club Prairie Fire podcast.

Rohit Sharma had a disappointing year in the longer formats of cricket, struggling both as a batter and as a captain. Looking back at 2024, it was arguably his worst year in Test cricket, despite starting the year with a century against England. By the end of the year, he had a batting average of only 11.4. Additionally, he lost a home series as captain a significant setback after 12 years of dominance. His poor performance ultimately led to him being dropped from the last Test.

When discussing Rohit Sharma’s situation regarding the Champions Trophy, Adam Gilchrist expressed confidence in him leading the team, while also suggesting it might be time for Rohit to consider retiring from international cricket.

I think he'll probably have a crack at the Champions Trophy and that might be...that might see him out," he added.

Rohit Sharma has been under immense scrutiny both on and off the field due to his form and various issues that have surfaced online. Despite these challenges, he is expected to lead India in the Champions Trophy 2025, a format where he has historically performed well.

Rohit Sharma's future in International cricket seems closely tied to his performance in the upcoming Champions Trophy. If things don't go well, he will likely face immense pressure to reassess his career decisions. Given the expectations on him as India's captain, his form in this crucial tournament could determine whether he continues in the longer format or decides to step back. The coming months will undoubtedly be pivotal in shaping cricketing future.
