Shreyas Iyer is reportedly nearing a return to India’s national squads for both the T20I and Test formats. As per a report in The Times of India, he is likely to earn a recall for the Asia Cup 2025 and the two-match Test series against the West Indies.
Iyer last featured in a T20I in December 2023 against Australia and played his most recent Test in February 2024 against England in Visakhapatnam. He has now rebuilt his case for a comeback.Â
After struggling with form and fitness issues through 2023 and the early part of 2024, he has made a strong return to competitive cricket across formats. In the Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025), Shreyas Iyer led Punjab Kings (PBKS) to the final and scored 604 runs in the tournament at an average of 50.33 and a strike-rate of 175.07.

Shreyas Iyer’s Test & T20I Return Likely After Stunning IPL 2025 Run
The selectors are expected to meet in the coming weeks to finalise India’s squad for the Asia Cup, to be played in the T20 format in the UAE from September 9, and the home Test series against the West Indies, starting October 2 in Ahmedabad. Iyer is in the scheme of things for both assignments.
As per the TOI report, voices within the selection panel believe that Iyer’s class and experience in the middle-order was missed in Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England. A source closely involved in the selection process was quoted saying:
"We need Iyer’s class and experience in the middle order in all formats. It’s something which we missed in England during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The selectors are aware that Iyer is an excellent player of spin bowling, which will be crucial in a home season that involves four Tests — two each against the West Indies and South Africa."
Strong Domestic Season and Champions Trophy Highlight Shreyas Iyer’s Form
While he was sidelined from the Test and T20I sides following a combination of back injury and a fallout over his reluctance to play domestic cricket, Iyer’s response in recent months has earned praise from within the BCCI.Â
He returned to the Ranji Trophy circuit and had a strong season for Mumbai. He amassed 480 runs in seven innings at an average of 68.57, including two centuries. That was followed by his selection in the West Zone squad for the upcoming Duleep Trophy. If gets selected for the Asia Cup, he would have to miss the domestic tournament.
Despite missing out on T20I and Test cricket last year, Iyer continued to be part of India’s ODI team. He finished as the highest run-scorer for India in Champions Trophy 2025. He scored 243 runs in five games at an average of 48.60. That performance only strengthened the case for his return across formats.
