Cricket Association Of Bengal fiasco

The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) is seemingly going through a turbulent period after two of its senior officials are under the radar for financial misconduct and misuse of office amenities.

CAB has reportedly issued a show cause notice to Joint Secretary Debabrata Das and Treasurer Prabir Chakraborty after the irregularities were brought to notice.

Joint Secretary Debabrata Das is a prominent name within Bengal cricket. He was issued a show cause notice by CAB on charges of withholding nearly Rs 7 lakhs in ticket revenue from the association and retaining money that was meant for East Bengal and Town Club's tournament participation. CAB has asked him to return back the money within 15 days.

Debabrata Das, Prabir Chakraborty Under CAB's Radar For Money Laundering

Meanwhile, this is not the first time Debabrata Das has got himself into trouble during his tenure with CAB. Previously, he had a public spat with former Indian wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha, who questioned his commitment with the Bengal team. The spat resulted in Saha making a move to Tripura to extend his domestic career.

The other person questioned by CAB was Treasurer Prabir Chakraborty, who has been accused of conflict of interest. The complaint against him was filed by the Wari Club, which was referred by the Ombudsman back to the Apex Council. The complaint has now been forwarded by the Apex council back to the Ombudsman and he has been asked to formal investigation. Meanwhile, Chakraborty has been asked to submit a Utilization Certificate (UC) detailing the expenses of money under him.

The other big accusation against Debabrata Das is that he has been misusing the money from CAB in the name of paying the food bills through the association’s canteen account. He has been further accused of taking money from players in exchange of fake promises of giving them an opportunity to play for the Bengal team. The biggest complaint has come from The Aditya School of Sports, who said that Das has taken Rs 4 lakhs from them, promising them to get a CAB club affiliation. When contacted, Debabrata Das refused to comment on the same.
