Rohit Sharma’s future as India’s Test captain hangs in the balance with head coach Gautam Gambhir’s opinion set to play a pivotal role. According to a PTI report, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will lean heavily on Gambhir’s input when deciding if Rohit will lead India in the five-match Test series versus England, starting in June.
Rohit’s Test captaincy has faced scrutiny after India lost the home series to New Zealand and the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 against Australia, costing them a spot in the World Test Championship final. His own batting struggles led him to bench himself for the fifth Test in Sydney this year.
As per the report, the BCCI source dwelled on a technicality, citing that Rohit himself opted out of the Sydney Test and is still officially India's Test skipper.
"Technically, Rohit remains the Test captain. He voluntarily benched himself from the last Test in Sydney where he explained that a team can’t carry on with multiple out of form batters. After Australia Tests, India haven’t played any Tests and hence there has been no change in Test captaincy. Also Rohit never said he doesn’t want to play Tests," a BCCI source said as quoted to PTI .

The source further revealed that the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 serves as both a breather and a planning phase for the selection committee and a decision on Rohit is expected in this period.
"The selection committee gets a break during IPL. Obviously with all matches televised, they always don’t need to travel unless they have some specific strategy or they want to watch a particular player from up close. So once IPL starts, the blueprint for England series will be drawn at some point. But (coach) Gautam Gambhir’s view point will have a lot of weightage," the source added.

Rohit Sharma Not Retiring From ODIs
Rohit’s white-ball future was also questioned earlier but after leading India to the Champions Trophy title this month - capped by a match-winning 76 against New Zealand - he shut down retirement rumors, saying:
"No future plans. Jo ho raha hain, woh chalta jayega (Whatever is happening will keep continuing). I am not going to retire from this (ODI) format. Going forward, please don't spread rumours," Rohit had said after winning the Champions Trophy 2025.
