The BCCI announced India's test squad for the five-match series against England on Saturday, May 24, via a press conference. In the same announcement, the BCCI selectors also named Shubman Gill as the new Test skipper of Team India.
The BCCI was looking for their new Test skipper after Rohit Sharma announced his Test retirement on May 7. His retirement call was followed by Virat Kohli's Test retirement as well on May 12. The sudden Test retirements of the champion players left the BCCI a lot to do as they went about their business of naming the Indian Test side for the England tour.
Team India will play a five-Test match series to kick off their WTC 2025-27 campaign. This will be Gill's first assignment as India's full-time Test captain. He has played at number three for the majority of his Test career but has still not cemented his place in the side in whites.

Shubman Gill Announced As Next India Test Captain
With Rohit Sharma retired, Shubman Gill now has an opportunity to open as well in Test cricket. It will be interesting to see whether he takes that decision. The BCCI had three major names in mind as India's next Test captain with Gill, Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah being the options.
Bumrah decided to take his name out of potential Test captaincy, keeping in mind his recent injury-prone history and workload. Pant's recent form with the bat might have made the selectors go in favour of Gill, who will now have a huge responsibility on his shoulders.
The BCCI has already announced the India A side that will be playing two first-class games against England Lions at Canterbury and Northampton. The side will then play an intra-squad game against the senior men's Test team.
