Shubman Gill was born on 8th September 1999 to Lakhwinder Singh and Keart Gill in Chak Jaimal Singh Wala of Fazilka district, Punjab, India. He has an elder sibling, a sister named Shahneel Gill. His father was a farmer who had aspirations of becoming a cricketer. Shubman also displayed an interest in cricket from the age of 3. His father took note of this and started to train him from a very early age. The family also moved to Mohali in 2007, near the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium, to provide better training opportunities for Shubman.
Shubman was initially enrolled in The Dayanand Model School in Fazilka, Punjab. However, once the family moved to Mohali in 2007, he joined Manav Mangal Smart School. He successfully completed his matriculation from the same school. It was his father who first trained him and sharpened his skills from a very early age. His father would bowl him 500-700 balls every day to help him learn how to bat. In Mohali, he joined the Paragon Cricket Academy and was coached by Sukwinder Singh Tinku, who was impressed by his abilities at such a young age. He was also noticed by Karsan Ghavri who mentored him and prepared him to face higher-quality bowling oppositions.
Gill is single and has not been married yet. He has also not confirmed any relationships to the public. There were rumors about him dating Sara Tendulkar, daughter of the legend Sachin Tendulkar, and these rumors began circulating around social media in 2020. There were also rumors of him dating Sara Ali Khan, daughter of Indian actor Saif Ali Khan, in 2023. However, nothing was confirmed by either one of them. Recently, he has been linked to Avneet Kaur, a social media influencer, with Kaur attending multiple matches and sharing the same on social media. Rumors about them dating have not been confirmed by either party.
Gill’s primary residence is a lavish and opulent home located in the Firozpur district of Punjab. The property is estimated to be valued at a whopping Rs 3.2 crore. The general demeanor of the interior is one of comfort and luxury. It includes amenities like a home gym, spa-like bathrooms, a trophy wall and more. Gill also is the owner of a property in Mohali, near the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium, where his cricketing journey began to take shape.
Gill’s car collection may not be as expansive as some of his cricketing peers, but it still exhibits a blend of luxury and performance, and he still has a long time to keep adding to his collection. He owns a Range Rover Velar - a luxury SUV; a Mercedes-Benz E350 - an E-class premium sedan aimed at offering performance and comfort; and a Mahindra Thar - the off-roader that was gifted by Anand Mahindra.
Gill has deals with multiple renowned brands across multiple domains. He has collaborated with Nike, MRF, Oakley, and beatXP when it comes to sports and fitness. He has appeared for Tata Capital and Bajaj Allianz Life for finance. For electronics and tech, he has paired with Casio G-Shock and Wings. He has also appeared for My11Circle, The Sleep Company and Coca-Cola. His public image is one that is well-maintained and respected, particularly by the younger demographic of India. His popularity is on a steady rise.
Gill is an admirer of football, and he is an ardent supporter of Lionel Messi, calling him the “GOAT” (Greatest Of All Time). He supported Argentina throughout the 2022 World Cup, expressing his desire for them to win the tournament so that Messi could get his final prize before leaving the grand stage. He is also a big supporter and fan of the Brazilian, Neymar Jr. Gill also can be sighted playing football in warm-up matches and integrates it as a part of his training to stay fit and to stay on top of his game.
His love for football doesn’t end with just that, however. He is also an avid gamer, particularly playing FIFA. Other than that, he has also recently expressed his intrigue for spirituality. He is also aligned with keeping himself fit. Quite interestingly, Gill has also voiced “Pavitra Prabhakar” - an Indian version of Spider-Man - in the animated film “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” in 2023. His voice acting debut was, safe to say, well received, as the film itself was a box office success. Perhaps we could witness him venture more into the film and entertainment industry in the future.
Gill’s advocacy for philanthropy is quite generous and deserves recognition. He made a significant donation of medical equipment worth Rs 35 lakh to the Civil Hospital in Mohali in March of 2025. The list includes ventilators, ICU beds, syringe pumps, operating theater tables, ceiling lights, and X-ray machines. Other than this act of generosity, Gill also advocates for philanthropic causes via his social media accounts. He also collaborated with an NGO to distribute food to the underprivileged children, showcasing his love for philanthropy and belief in the cause.
Gill made his domestic debut for Punjab in List A Cricket against Vidarbha on February 27, 2017, in the 2016-17 Vijay Hazare Trophy. Impressively, he scored a century in the second match that he played in the tournament against Assam, putting up 121 runs on the board. In the very same year, Gill appeared in his debut first-class cricket in the 2017-18 Ranji Trophy against Bengal on November 17, 2017. He scored his maiden first-class century against Services in his second match in the competition, mirroring his achievement in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Gill was acquired by Kolkata Knight Riders in January of 2018 for Rs 1.8 crore at the 2018 IPL Auction. He made his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 14, 2018. He stayed in KKR until the end of the 2022 season, and he had quite a commendable track record during his period, becoming KKR’s highest run scorer in 2020 and 2021. However, he was not retained after the 2021 season, and he joined Gujarat Titans in 2022, where he tasted even more success, winning the Orange Cap for the 2023 season in the process. He remains at GT for the 2025 season as well.
Gill made his ODI debut for the national team on January 31, 2019, against New Zealand at Seddon Park, Hamilton. He scored a mere 9 runs, but trained eyes could commend his timing and technique. In August of the same year, he became the youngest Indian player to score a double-century in first-class cricket.
Then came his Test debut at the Boxing Day Test on December 26, 2020, against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. He scored 45 runs in the first innings and 35 runs in the second innings, and his impressive performances led India to a victory.
Gill made his T20I debut for India against Sri Lanka on January 3, 2023, in Mumbai, where he didn’t impress much. However, just a month later he scored 126 runs against New Zealand, which inducted him into the record books as the highest individual score achieved by an Indian batsman in T20Is. Shubman Gill has been named the captain of the Indian Test team after the retirement of Rohit Sharma. Gill will be leading the Indian side for the 5-match tour of England.
Gill sustained a left thumb fracture during a practice session of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. This rendered him incapable of playing in the first match of the series. It was predicted that it would take 2-3 weeks for him to make a full recovery, and he made a remarkable comeback within the same. His fitness and training regimen includes strength & hypertrophy training, agility and speed drills, core stability and flexibility, and proper nutrition. His dedication is pretty commendable, and it aligns with his dedication to his craft in the game.
Gill’s net worth, as of 2025, is estimated to be around Rs 32 crore (~$4 million). He holds a BCCI Grade A contract, which bags Rs 5 crore every year. He also earns a hefty sum from his IPL contract as well, though figures are not publicly disclosed. Gill is estimated to charge anywhere from Rs 50 lakh to Rs 4 crore per brand deal, and he earns approximately Rs 10-12 crore annually from brand collaborations alone. He has collaborated with numerous high-profile brands such as Nike, MRF, CEAT, Casio, Tata Capital, My11Circle, Danone, MuscleBlaze and multiple other brands. Of course, his assets, such as his residences and car collections, also add to his net worth.
