Tim Seifert Back in ODI Fold as Mark Chapman's Injury Replacement for 2nd ODI vs Pakistan

New Zealand have been thrown into disarray with the news that star batter Mark Chapman will miss the second ODI against Pakistan due to a grade-one hamstring tear.

The injury, sustained during the series-opener, comes as a bitter blow following Chapman’s match-winning century just days ago, leaving the Black Caps scrambling to adjust for the crucial clash scheduled at the Seddon Park in Hamilton on Wednesday.

Chapman was the hero of the first ODI in Napier, where he smashed a career-best 132 off 111 balls, powering New Zealand to a commanding 344/9 and a 73-run victory over Pakistan. His knock, laced with 13 fours and six sixes, showcased his dominance against the Men in Green. Five of his six highest T20I scores and now his top ODI performance has come against Pakistan.

An MRI scan conducted on Monday confirmed the grade-one tear, a mild but frustrating injury that sidelines him for the second ODI. Head coach Gary Stead expressed regret over the setback but remained hopeful about Chapman’s recovery.

"It’s obviously disappointing news for Mark, after a really special innings in the opening ODI in Napier," said Stead as quoted on the eve of the second ODI.
"We’re thankful that the hamstring injury is only minor so we’re hopeful that Mark will be able to complete his rehabilitation and be available for the final match of the summer in the Mount," he added.

Tim Seifert Receives ODI Call-Up

With Chapman ruled out, New Zealand have turned to Tim Seifert, who will make a dramatic return to ODI cricket after a six-year absence. The 30-year-old wicketkeeper-batter last featured in the 50-over format in 2019 but has been in scintillating form recently, topping the run charts in the preceding T20I series against Pakistan. He smashed 249 runs at a strike-rate of 207.50.

"With several new faces in this squad it’s great to be able to call on a player of Tim’s experience,” Stead shared.
"He’s in good form after a great T20 series and he provides another strong top-order batting option heading into an important match tomorrow," he concluded.

Pakistan Grapple with Usman Khan's Injury

Pakistan, meanwhile, will see Chapman’s absence as a golden opportunity to level the series after faltering in Napier, where they slumped from 249/3 to 271 all-out.

The visitors are also grappling with an injury of their own with opener Usman Khan ruled out of the second ODI due to a hamstring issue.
